The Mercedes-Benz E-Class W211 (2003–2009) is a common sight on American roads, and its cabin air filter is often overlooked. A clogged filter causes reduced airflow from your HVAC, musty odors, and fogged windows — especially noticeable in humid US climates like the Southeast. Replacing it takes 15 minutes and about $20.

W211 Cabin Filter Location

Unlike many cars where the cabin filter is behind the glove box, the W211 Mercedes stores its filters behind the dashboard on the passenger side, accessed from inside the cabin. The filter housing is located at the base of the windshield on the right side.

US Fitment Note

The W211 was sold in the US from 2003 to 2009. US-spec cars have the same cabin filter as European-spec W211s. The correct size is 245 x 200mm (Bosch part: C 3336, or equivalent). Most Amazon listings specify W211 fitment directly.

Replacement Procedure

1. Access the Filter Housing

Open the passenger door. Look at the lower dashboard area on the right side — there's a plastic cover. Remove the two Phillips screws and pull the cover off.

2. Slide Out the Old Filters

The W211 uses two parallel rectangular filters. Slide them out horizontally toward you. Note which direction the airflow arrows point.

3. Clean the Housing

Remove any leaves, dust, or debris from the housing. In US climates — particularly in the South and Midwest — leaves and tree debris accumulate here.

4. Install New Filters

Slide the new filters in with the airflow arrows pointing in the same direction as the originals (typically pointing down toward the blower). Push them fully in until snug.

5. Reinstall the Cover

Reattach the plastic cover and tighten the Phillips screws. Do not overtighten — the plastic housing is fragile.

Why This Matters for US Drivers

American driving means lots of highway miles, high-pollen seasons, and varied climates. The W211's HVAC system pulls air through these filters for every mile you drive with the fan on. A saturated filter can harbor mold in humid states (Florida, Georgia, Louisiana), which blows directly into the cabin.

Replace every 12,000–15,000 miles or once per year — whichever comes first. Spring is the best time in the US due to high pollen counts.
